Fixing up my fireplace! Please help!!!?

So I just bought this house that was built in the late 70's...it has an old fireplace with wood paneling all around it that goes to the ceiling.. I'm kind of scared to remove the wood paneling because I dont know whats behind it..is it just drywall that I can paint? Any suggestions on what I can do to up date it???
