Don't Ask Don't Tell question.....?

One of the main arguments for opposing the repeal is because having open LGBT peoples would cause too much of a distraction. My question is, why is this only in the military? Why can't it also be extended to schools? You change and/or shower with gay people at school, in sports, etc. for long lengths of time. Why is this just a military issue? Thanks.
